Touched by His Hand: The Reflections of Phillip Keller
Published in Hardcover by Budget Book Service (September, 1996)
Author: Phillip Keller
Average review score:

wonderful imagery of God from nature
Phillip Keller is one of my most favorite authors. This book is one reason why. It takes you out into the world of nature and relates God's Word to us with amazing imagery. I especially loved three sections. One is "Sky Edge" because it spoke of God to me through the mountains that I love so well. From his writing, I could see that Mr. Keller loved them as well. The second section is called "As a Tree Grows". Mr. Keller shows us a Christian's spiritual growth through the giant cedars of Lebanon. I have not been able to think of trees in the same manner after reading this. The other section that is close to my heart is called "Still Waters". I had no trouble putting myself into the scenery that Mr. Keller described with such vivid descriptions. The other section, "Sea Edge" was also written with clear imagery for the reader. I just don't love the sea as much as I do the woods and mountains. I am always able to pick this book up, read it again and still get something new from it. I never have trouble picking this book up for a few minutes. The problem comes when I need to lay it down for a while, I don't want to quit reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone at all!

The Trouble With Boys: A Wise and Sympathetic Guide to the Risky Business of Raising Sons
Published in Paperback by Basic Books (September, 1995)
Authors: Angela Phillips and Robert Coles
Average review score:

Thought provoking, insightful and a good read
Why is it that men are responsible for such a disproportionate number of the dysfunctional things that happen in society - violent crime, abandoning children, war, etc., etc.? Is there something odd about the process by which male children are raised? This author provides some illuminating ideas, and some intriguing facts. Angela Phillips has a command of the interesting statistics, but, as a journalist, presents these statistics in a very readable, absorbing form. A great read about a subject that is close to most peoples' interests

A True Likeness: The Black South of Richard Samuel Roberts 1920-1936

A True Likeness: The Black South of Richard S. Roberts
This book was a visual journey into the lives of early 20th century black america. Many of the pictures could be termed as "dignified photo essays" of life in the black community. You feel as though you are right there behind the lenses of these photo's while they're being taken. They almost have an "ethereal beauty" about them. In these photo's you can see the dignity of a race of people who were considered low class at the time of the photographs, but in the way they are portrayed you feel like you're in the presence of royalty. "A visual treat for the eye's" is the best way to describe this book . It is also well worth reading as you enjoy the beautiful photography! I would highly recommended this book to african americans and those who enjoy a look into the past!

Two Millennia of Mathematics: From Archimedes to Gauss (Cms Advanced Books in Mathematics, 6)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (September, 2000)
Author: George M. Phillips
Average review score:

Math motivated by history
You might think this is a history of math book but it isn't, it's a math book where the 5 topics are subjects the author likes and he motivates the math via some history. You can "look inside" to see the topics, but what I believe to be the most important thing in a review of a math book is "who is this appropriate for ?". The answer in this case is a person with a math background like you would receive in a physics, chemistry, or engineering undergrad degree or a math major undergrad student. You will not be able to follow it without a certain mathematical maturity. I loved it because I'm a mathematician with an interest in these subjects which I have seen before. A more advanced book along the same lines is "Pi and the AGM". People looking for interesting math not requiring as much math background might like "Prime Obsession" or "The Golden Ratio".

Two Women Under Water: A Confession

Author: Peggy Phillips

A fascinating spellbinder above and below the surface.
This is a highly unusual and riveting adventure describing the dramatic encounter between a Broadway press agent and Hitler's favorite filmmaker, Leni Riefenstahl during a recent Red Sea scuba-dive trip. This intriguing, compelling story is told against a background of modern humor, show business, and haunting personal memories leading to the unexpected impact of a shocking and highly unusual climax.

Ultimate Aircraft
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Philip Jarrett and Phillip Jarret
Average review score:

Stunning cover design, Aircraft Enthusiast reference...
For the committed aircraft enthusiast, you just won't find a more valuable reference source for fascinating information about the evolution of aircraft and the pioneers who gave humans wings.

Ultimate Aircraft charts every main step from the first experimental gliders to the high-powered supersonic jets and the high-capacity airliners of today. If you have ever watched the Blue Angels flying overhead while floating in the ocean, you will know why an aircraft could get your attention. I have seen the Blue Angels flying a few times and I am always amazed at their precise flying and talent.

This book includes an extensive biographical section which profiles the major designers, engineers and pilots who have changed the fact of transportation around the globe. You will read about the Wright brothers and Chuck Yeager. There is a comprehensive glossary which defines terms such as: Flutter, Ballonet, Dope, Lateral Control, etc. The Index provides instant access to many topics.

The first part of the book reveals the history of aircraft, the second part is a visual gallery of aircraft and the book ends with an extensive section on Aviation Innovators. Page 110-111 is quite fun and page 111 folds out to show the Boeing B-52G in detail. Page 140 shows a Northrop Grumman proposal for an Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) which looks like an alien ship to me!

On some of the pages a small box has all the specification for the aircraft being discussed. The pictures are stunning and you will soon decide on your favorite plane.

Philip Jarret was the assistant editor of Aeroplane Monthly magazine. He is now a freelance writer and editor, and has produced countless articles on a wide variety of aeronautical subjects. He also lectures on aviation topics. He is also the author of Icarus: Percy Pilcher and the Quest for Flight and is also currently series editor for the Putman History of Aircraft volumes. Other books in this Ultimate series include: Ultimate Harley-Davidson and Ultimate Train.

A definitive reference to aviation history! This book makes me want to go watch Top Gun! Perhaps play the music in the background while you read. My husband is threatening to take me parachute gliding, who knows...I might just do it. So, if you never hear from me again....:).
